This is the official site of N.K. Valek.

I’m an author working to create an extensive and beautiful world for fans and all my characters to get lost and found in someday (seeking agents).

I started this whole writing thing in 2009 when I was thirteen, roleplaying on neopets (ah, the glory days). Full commitment to the writer identity came when I read an advice page that said, “If you want to be a professional writer, you have to treat writing as a job. Write every day, even when you don’t want to.”

From that day, I’ve finished all four books in the Selenia Ki series (or The Lost Elementalist series; I’m still playing around with the name) and several short stories to go with it. I’m now editing and revising for my debut, be it with an agent and traditional publishing or on my own in self/hybrid publishing. 

As of May 2025, I am revising so many things. Book 1 is now Book 1 and 2 and part of book 3 and there will be somewhere around 4 or 6 books in total for the first series. Maybe.

~ Selenia Ki: Storm Clouds ~

Mystical shadows have cut through fourteen-year-old Selenia Ki’s quiet Colorado neighborhood, striking fear into every heart. Few people are brave enough to talk about the strange event, but Selenia’s starving curiosity screams for the freedom of endless stars and the alluring whispers of the shadows that had to come from somewhere. 

These shadows are only heralds for more abnormalities. When a fiery fox sleeps outside Selenia’s bedroom window, it leads her to learn that a whole different Earth exists, war-torn and full of amazing magic that she might have inside. Of course, her domineering mother doesn’t want her thinking about things like dark magic, elemental powers, or alternate universes. Apparently imagination is a punishable affront to teenage development. But the forces hunting Selenia are real. 

Her mundane counterpart from an alternate universe wants Selenia’s elemental powers all to himself. If he steals them, Selenia will die. Only with the help of her friends can Selenia master her elements to defend herself, but betrayal lurks behind every corner. Family secrets turn loved ones against Selenia. In the midst of grief and self doubt, Selenia witnesses a true friend risking their life to protect her. Now it’s her turn to save what remains of her found family. No matter what happens, will she be able to recognize herself after the dust settles?

SELENIA KI: STORM CLOUDS is a 67,000 word cross-genre novel of science fiction and fantasy. Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Tangled, it features a freedom-seeking girl who chases after elemental magic from a world tainted by darkness. It calls to the younger side of the YA audience and those navigating the Upper MG world, specifically 11-15 y/olds. 

Neurodiversity has always been an important subject to me, and my series features characters with ADHD (#ownvoice), chronic depression with anxiety (also #ownvoice) and autism (~3 sensitivity readers and lots of “ownvoices” research). It was inspired by LARP games I used to play with my siblings and friends growing up.

On my Instagram and elsewhere, I have a few short stories that I intend to polish when I’m less obsessed with my novels. I’ve also published a few co-translations of folklore from the Caucasus regions in various small journals.

Eventually I’m gonna pursue publishing for a children’s book I wrote a while back about a curious kitten that makes a big mistake.
