Discussion Questions: Killer Instinct

Here are some book club discussion questions that I thought of for my book club for Killer Instinct, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, book 2 in The Naturals series:

1) Why is it titled “Killer Instinct”?

2) Why didn’t Dean go to the police when he was younger?

3) Was Dean’s mother right to abandon him and not take him back?

4) Is Michael’s tactic of “make them angry so they don’t surprise you” excusable behavior, knowing it is a coping mechanism? (i.e. Does the fact that bad behavior is a coping mechanism make said bad behavior okay?)

5) Which Natural ability would you want to have?

6) Which are you more likely to have?

7) The Love Triangle trope is a major subplot in this book. Was it a positive or negative addition to the story? (For deeper discussion: What are the purposes of subplots? What other kinds of tropes could have been used here? Is this a good execution of the Love Triangle trope, or do you have better examples or suggestions on how to write it?)

8) The Naturals series is written in first person, past tense. Why do you think the author chose these styles? Do they help or hurt the story?

9) Who is your favorite character?

10) Who is your least favorite character?

11) Did any part of the book elicit a strong emotional reaction?

12) If you could change anything about the book, what would it be?
