Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is not about a minotaur playing a trumpet on a random pillar. It is about a man. I cannot say anything else because the entire book is a plot twist as intricate and intense as the twisting halls and tides in the house (vast, vast world) where it takes place.

Every character had a story, a flaw or problem to overcome. Very little is as it seems on the surface. Talk about strong world building and well written characters! I laughed out loud and cried and laughed while crying several times while reading this book.
